After many years of effort, Washington state has passed legislation ensuring equal civil and legal rights for all of our citizens. I have worked for many years on this important issue, and am a proud co-convener of the Religious Coalition for Equality, an interfaith coalition of clergy and lay persons actively working to achieve what all of our faiths proclaim - the inherent, equal value and dignity of every person. On January 16, I was honored to be asked to write an Op Ed for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on this important issue.
The bill was approved by our legislature, and signed by Gov. Gregoire on January 30. This law amends the state's Human Rights Act to protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons from being discriminated against in employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations - a protection which already exists based on race, religion, sex, and disability. In passing this legislation, Washington becomes the 17th state to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination. I was honored not only to attend the bill signing, but to bring my young daughter to witness this historic and joyous event!
