Rev. Dr. Thomas McCormick
As a campus minister for Cooperating Ministries in Higher Education in the mid 1960's, Dr. Thomas McCormick was invited by the University of Washington School of Medicine to provide informal seminars in bioethics and the care of dying patients. After completing doctoral studies in ethics, Dr. McCormick was invited to join the UW faculty in the Department of Biomedical History to initiate a program in medical ethics. He joined the faculty part-time in 1974, while continuing his work as a campus minister, and for over a decade was the School of Medicine’s sole bioethics instructor, teaching on the Seattle campus and later at sites in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. In 1985, Dr. McCormick fully joined the growing faculty of the newly renamed Department of Medical History and Ethics. He retired in 2001, retaining a part-time position as Senior Lecturer Emeritus in Bioethics. He continues to teach ethics in the medical school's core curriculum, to offer multidisciplinary elective courses, and to serve as guest lecturer in other university departments as well as around the world.
Cooperating Ministries in Higher Education (CMHE)
Cooperating Ministries in Higher Education (CMHE) is a progressive, ecumenical ministry of five Protestant denominations: the American Baptist Church USA, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Presbyterian Church USA, the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. Rev. Monica Corsaro, ordained United Methodist, serves as campus minister. CMHE has been serving the UW community since 1948, moving into its current home in beautiful Covenant House in the early 1970s. CMHE offers one-on-one and group ministry for students, counseling and crisis response services to the University of Washington, and events for the university community. CMHE is part of a national and regional structure, with sister ministries at all of the public universities in the Pacific Northwest.
